Don Don Funk & DJ Dren
a1."No Otha Mutha" a2."Future Sock" a3."Mutha
Beats"
MC Don Don Funk was schooled on all aspects of partying during the early
London acid house scene and raves such as Sunrise, Biology and Rage .
Fascinated by early hardcore and jungle it was DJ’s like Grooverider
and Nicky Blackmarket that inspired Mr Funk to invest in a set of 2nd
hand L.A.D. turntables following a relocation to Cornwall.
During some heavy investigation into the south west underground party
circuit it wasn’t long before he met DJ Dren and became introduced
to the hip hop beats. The influence of the breakbeats had initiated Don
Don into Mcing and Djing at local parties and he started working on his
own style. This was interrupted by some holidays at Her Majesty’s
Pleasure and the usual party hard lifestyle until 2004. A turning point
occurred when Don Don found himself busting rhymes through a megaphone
at 3am on Towan Beach in Newquay, Cornwall. A mental night which led him
into being hooked back up with Dren. A meeting at a studio with Dren spawned
a totally of the cuff track ‘Future Sock’, originally done
for old times sake it soon became apparent that something more had happened.
Just Brian at 33Throwdown recognised the potential and took the project
onboard, the rhyme writing continued furiously and was combined with Dren’s
beats. The first 2 tracks are now ready to appear on 33Throwdown (TTT007).
‘Future Sock’ provides real thought provoking lyrics with
a chorus that simply gets into your head and has found favour from a much
wider audience. In contrast, ‘No Otha Mutha’ is a straight
up in yer face single verse rhyme over a ridiculously crazy fat beat showing
the versatility of sound available to Don Don’s productions. An
album co-produced with DJ Dren is in the pipeline showcasing some diverse
styles lyrically and musically.
Don Don’s musical influences are wide ranging from his first record
purchase, ‘Mama Said Knock You Out’ by LL Cool J. Other major
life changing tunes include ‘Renegade Snares’ and the awesome
‘Total Confusion’ by A Homeboy, A Hippy and a Funky Dread.
Massive Attack ‘Blue Lines’, any Biggie Smalls, Kanye West,
Zero 7, Outkast, Alicia Keys along with the DJing and Productions of Grooverider,
RZA and Roni Size.
Saxon Scoundrels
b1."Stars On 33" b2."Stars On 33(edit)"
The Principle is simple, keep it funky and keep peoples feet moving,
yet the end result is anything but simple.
The Saxon Scoundrels, with more than one foot in the boot of all things
old school Hip Hop and Electro, and tongue planted firmly in cheek, take
you on a journey from the very origins of Rap and Funk, crashing right
up to date in a frenzy of beats hard enough to split granite, stopping
at all points on the way.
The boys have embarked on their mission to become Crown Rulers of the
next generation of edit mixers. Building on a firm foundation of releases
for Freddy Fresh`s BBoy Beats And Pieces label, various notorious White
Labels, and previous 33 Throwdown releases, the Scoundrels take Cut N
Paste mixing to the next level utilising the technologies of today, complimenting
these perfectly with a liberal dose of the roughest, most authentic, analog
bboy sounds and rhythms that they hold so dear.
From the offset the gameplan is obvious, the beats are fierce, and the
edits fly at you from all angles like Mig fighters scrambled on a beat
foraging mission. Nothing is sacred and no stone is left unturned in the
quest for the funkiest of beats. Paying homage to the pioneers of Electro
and Rap, drawing inspiration from the kings of the mix[Chep Nunze/Rascals/D.ST/Mastermind/Steinski
etc]the end result is an onslaught of such intensity it leaves you wondering
what hit you!
Pillaging grooves from every source imaginable there is something for
everyone. From the obscure undiscovered beats and raps, to the staple
classics. Everything is touched upon but is then treated to the Scoundrels
patented treatment, and thoroughly wrung through the boys bboy mangle,
resulting in a collage of beats and downright funkiness that will have
you reaching for the lino quicker than you can say "Mike Allen"
The torch has been passed and the gauntlet thrown down. Whichever way
you look at it the mission is well underway, and to quote the record
"The DJ`s are ready to take over now", and would you argue with
them??
The Scoundrels[Ictus and MP3 Genius]have more than 40 years of mixing
pedigree between them. Transcending from pause button beginnings, through
4 track and early home computer tinkering, to modern day, mhz, multi track
mayhem.
The boys got together 3 years ago after solo projects for Freddy Fresh`s
BBoy Beats and Pieces label and now work together on a mission to rekindle
the fun and naughtiness of the original 80`s edit and bootleg mixes that
inspired them to take to the wheels of steel in the first place.
Keep It Locked.
